Ramaiah Institute of Science and Management

FAQs

General Information

A capstone project is a hands-on project where students apply the knowledge and skills they have gained during their course to solve real-world problems, often in collaboration with industry or research organizations. It will start from 2nd year and continue till 4th year.

Resilient Engineering focuses on designing systems that can make students adapt, recover, and perform reliably under uncertain and changing conditions. Unlike traditional engineering programs, it emphasizes adaptability, sustainability, interdisciplinary learning, and real-world problem-solving.

The first two years provide a strong interdisciplinary foundation across core engineering and science subjects, ensuring students develop broad problem-solving skills before specializing in their core disciplines and specializations.

Program Structure & Facilities

The program is planned as primarily residential; however, provisions for day scholars will also be available.

Hostel facilities are provided within 3 km from the campus. Single, double sharing, and air-conditioned rooms are available depending on availability and preference.

Please refer to Students Hostels FAQs for other related questions.

Yes, three facilities are available: one full-fledged canteen and two cafeteria to meet the varied tastes and preferences of students.

Curriculum & Academics

RISM is a Distinct Deemed to be University. It is enabled to design all its programmes and confer Degrees to the students.

RISM is a Distinct Deemed to be University. The phrase "Deemed to be" means "Considered to be" rather than "Will become".

No, the curriculum is independently designed and may differ from that of VTU, focusing on modern, industry-aligned, and interdisciplinary learning to become a resilient engineer.

Students who go through RISM courses will receive foundational preparation that helps them in competitive exams such as GATE. Special coaching is planned for students aspiring for GATE and other entrance examinations in their pre-final and final years of study.

Yes, Machine Learning and related emerging technologies are included as core and interdisciplinary subjects across multiple branches.

Campus Development & Infrastructure

The timeline for completion of the main campus will be 2028.

Yes, hostels are equipped with all amenities, with multiple accommodation options available for students.

Please check the Hostel FAQ for frequently asked questions about Hostel and Sports facilities.

Future Programs & Expansion

The following additional programmes in the following fields will be launched in the Main Campus starting from 2028:

Bio-Medical Engineering, Design and Manufacturing, Sustainability, and Systems Engineering.

Yes, there are plans to introduce postgraduate and doctoral programs when the university shifts to the main campus in 2028.

Yes, student exchange programs are part of the academic collaboration subject to necessary approval from AICTE. Please see the FAQs on RISM-UAlbany collaboration for a detailed answer as well as related FAQs.

Industry Collaboration & Exposure

RISM programmes are being co-developed and co-delivered with Industry partners from leading industries in India and abroad. An innovation and skilling collaboration with Dassault Systems is launched as part of the RISM-Ramaiah Skill Academy linkage. The knowledge partnership with UAlbany brings with it a large number of industrial collaborations. Industrial collaborations with leading high-tech industry, defense, aerospace and manufacturing industries are being established.

Collaborations will be expected with industries in technology, healthcare and medtech, manufacturing, energy, aerospace, defense, AI and other emerging sectors.

Yes, students will be provided opportunities for summer internships with partner organizations and other leading industries and start-ups. In addition, the three-year capstone project will involve industry-immersion in a much more substantial way and for a longer duration than an internship.

Students typically gain industry exposure from the second year, with significant involvement during later semesters through course projects, internships, and the three-year capstone work.

International Collaboration with U@ Albany

A 3+2 or 4+1 International Pathway is one of the most effective models for an Indo-US academic partnership because it gives students an internationally recognised education while reducing the overall cost of studying abroad. For RISM and the partnership with the University at Albany, the pathway is designed so that students complete part of their degree at RISM and the remainder at Albany, with credits transferred under a formal articulation agreement.

The curricula are jointly mapped semester by semester before the programme begins.

Option 1: 3+2 Pathway

This is the traditional engineering and science model.

Year Institution Student earns
Years 1–3 RISM Credits towards Bachelor’s degree
Years 4–5 University at Albany Remaining Bachelor’s requirements + Master’s degree coursework

At the end: RISM awards the Bachelor’s degree (after Albany confirms completion of remaining credits). Albany awards the Master’s degree.

Thus the student earns B.Tech (RISM) & MS (University at Albany) within five years instead of the normal six years.

Option 2: 4+1 Pathway

This has become increasingly popular because students complete the full bachelor’s degree in India.

Year Institution Outcome
Years 1–4 RISM Complete B.Tech
Year 5 University at Albany Complete MS

The student graduates from RISM before leaving India.

In both models, the fees are paid to the respective universities for the years of study.

The curricula at U Albany have been mapped with the curricula at RISM jointly to ensure that they are aligned and are ABET accreditation compliant. The programme outcomes, courses and course outcomes and the pedagogical methods are aligned and some of the courses will be taught by the U Albany faculty. Therefore, while the curricula are similar, they are suitably adapted to Indian conditions.

No. The B.Tech Degree is awarded by RISM and the MS degree (for those who opt for the 3+2 or the 4+1 programme) awarded by U Albany. It is not a Dual Degree programme. Though this is an option that RISM will explore after the first year of operation.

RISM has a knowledge partnership with U Albany. Under the partnership there are four pillars of collaboration: First is Knowledge Transfer including joint programme design, joint curricula development, joint development of courses, course outcomes and joint delivery of courses; the second pillar is capacity building and training under which RISM faculty will be trained by U Albany faculty, faculty from U Albany will be deputed to RISM to teach courses, and there will be mentoring of teachers and students of RISM by U Albany. The third pillar is to adopt international accreditation (ABET) for the RISM programmes of study, implement international student assessment and evaluation methods, and implement international quality assurance standards to improve student experience. The fourth pillar is industry immersion and translational research that will build much needed skill sets amongst students required to solve real-world problems.

The CS and AI, Electrical Sciences, and the VLSI and Embedded Systems programmes are aligned with U Albany. The aerospace programme is not.
